I've tried several tricks other threads have suggested but when clicking "Start Instance" nothing happens.

Do you have the latest java, and
runemate and runescape allowed through the firewall. How about clearing your cache for runescape? If you haven't go ahead and try all those. Oh and make sure you have the legacy runescape client downloaded.

I have the latest Java (both 32-bit and 64-bit I believe), I've allowed JagexLauncher and RuneMate through Windows Firewall and added them as exceptions in avast. I have the Old School RuneScape client downloaded from Jagex's site.

my client just keeps updating and closing and then when i click on it, it updates agin

Are you running the executable or standalone version?

Uninstall RuneMate and delete your cache files, then download and re-install.
