Oh god that wasn't a wise decision, did you update to the correct BIOS? Truth be told I'm not sure at all how you can go about updating it to a proper BIOS. More modern motherboards come with a BIOS Flashback feature to resolve this, the only way to solve this now is to physically replace your...

That 8 pin you have is for the motherboard to supply extra power, I'm rather surprised your power supply has no 8 pin for a GPU. While you can get 6-pin to 8-pin adapters, I wouldn't recommend it as an 8-pin will typically allow for more power delivery and that could result in trouble if your...

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/pQ9thM Note that while a lot of them will have a promo code, it won't apply to all of them, so it will likely total between $500 and $550 as opposed to what it says on PCPartPicker.

It will fit, however you could get a new one for a little more which comes with a free game and warranty, not to mention it's actually $11 cheaper than the used one if you do the mail-in rebate. Yeah I think your PC should handle games just fine with your current CPU and motherboard. Some badly made games and particularly CPU intensive games might hurt it a little, but aside from those you should be fine. If you want more RAM, then I recommend buying another stick of that, because then...

That power supply should have no issues powering a GTX 960, any CPU upgrade isn't necessarily worth it on your current motherboard. Instead I would recommend that you purchase a new motherboard and CPU so you are on a newer socket such as AM3+. Or you could pick up another 4GB kit of your RAM...

Speccy would be a great program to identify your motherboard without needing the box. This would be a great addition for your PC: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp42966kr The only issue is that I need more information related to your power supply. This could be obtained if you...

That would be a 980 Ti K|ngp|n edition, though a more realistic option would be an ASUS Strix 980 Ti.

Much appreciated :P Been looking locally for a job that would accommodate my interest in hardware, to no avail :(.

To be honest I would look into Crossfiring your R9 290X card with another, though this does come with some complications such as needing a new PSU and possibly a new motherboard. But then if I were to recommend a CPU upgrade, you would need a new motherboard anyway, I feel you're at a point...

The only difference I can see in particular is clockspeed difference, which doesn't really mean all that much. I would say the i5-6500 is the best bet given you don't need overclocking features.

    Thoughts on this budget build

I don't think you'll need another PSU if you were to run an R9 390, if you were running something akin to an FX-8350 then it would be a bit dicey. Yeah I wouldn't really recommend RAID for the average user anyway, unless they were looking for redundant storage for backups, as opposed to RAID 0...

    Thoughts on this budget build

That is what I mean, few games that I have played (or my brother for that matter) have been limited by an AMD CPU, instead the GPU is typically the limiting factor. In fact the only game(s) I've had issues with when using AMD or Intel were simply due to very poor game engines, strangely enough...

    Thoughts on this budget build

I feel the majority of your paragraph lacks context, for example what CPU bottlenecks 970/980? And to be quite honest your logic is rather flawed when it comes to budgets, chances are he isn't saving "200-300" because he wants to, instead it's to make it more affordable. Just because someone is...

    Thoughts on this budget build

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a problem, as long as the motherboard manufacturer supports it there shouldn't be an issue. I just checked his motherboard BIOS revisions and there is support for Haswell Refresh chips. I had to update my motherboard (ASUS Z87 Pro) to support my i7 4790k and...

    Thoughts on this budget build

Honestly there's not too much wrong with your build, I personally would ask exactly what day-to-day activity isn't performing optimally. Then it's possible to determine exactly what upgrade would be a tangible benefit to you. Only nitpick is that you are booting from a HDD as opposed to an SSD...

I should've asked for this before, but what do you do with your PC? That's typically what I would base my upgrade paths on. Also I'm assuming that's an R9 280/R9 290(X)?

Yeah I can do that for you, though to my knowledge there isn't a program that can obtain PSU information because it typically will not have a data link between it and the motherboard. Speccy is good for the majority of your hardware.

    4 core 3.8 vs 6 core 3.2 cpu

The Phenom is better, it's quite funny really. The Phenom architecture is older but better than their newer ones.

Apologies for the late reply, been rather busy. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RbbRWZ If you wanted more CPU power you might squeeze an X99 chipset in there, or you can chuck another 980 Ti in there for more gaming performance. Though that would cause it to go over-budget.
